How Do I Get Started with A Career as a Diesel Mechanic?

If you are interested in diesel engines and not only the ones installed on cars, but also the ones on high-capacity industrial and agricultural applications, you might want to consider a career as a diesel mechanic. Here is how you can get started:
- Understand what a diesel mechanic does – diesel mechanics use various technics to perform diagnostic procedures on diesel engines, they analyze the test results and decide the best course of action. They also keep in touch with spare part suppliers from which they order replacement parts, they install replacement parts and test the engines;
- Find a formal training program – you can train to become a diesel mechanic either by enrolling into a certificate program at a diesel technical school or by earning an associate degree. Certificate programs usually take six months to complete, while associate degree programs will require you to go back to school for two years;
- Gain experience – you can start working as a mechanic trainee while you are attending your formal training program or after you complete your course;
- Search for employment or start your own business – be prepared that it will take a couple of years to acquire the practical knowledge that you will need to be able to stand on your own feet, but you can be sure that good diesel mechanics will be in high demand for many years in the future, too.
